Warm Welcome at the Associated Primary Schools

Fun at Edinburgh Castle

Trip to Edinburgh

It was an interesting trip to the Scottish Parliament in the capital city yesterday. At the parliament, we had the chance to have an audience with the Scottish Minister for Europe and International Development. He recognises the strong relationship which is there between Malawi and Scotland dating back to almost 100years ago. There after we visited the Castle which harbours most of the Scottish History pertaining to the wars and the brevity of the Scottish people. It was so pleasing to see how rich our friends are in preserving their history. We also visited the Court Chambers. The country has so much magnificent structures making it a tourist destination centre. Today, we are likely to showcase some of our traditional dances after the farewell mass in the afternoon. Day 4 in the school

Yesterday we visited three schools; St Luke, St Winnings' and St Bridgets'. In all these schools we were welcomed with joy. Pupils were very much interested to know more about Malawi and Africa. For example some asked what subjects do pupils learn, what type of sports do we enjoy most, what type of food do we take most, what are the houses like in Malawi, how long does it take to travel from Malawi to Scotland, what type of weather do we experience and so many more questions. Time was the only limiting factor. There after, the Malawian team plus their host students travelled to the Bowling Alley for sporting activities. It was so fantastic! The Malawian team enjoyed the game as it was their first time to see and play such a game. Bravo to you Scottish friends! Today, the group travels to Edinburgh Parliament Castle. The whole day is expected to be spent there. Ken

Day three updates

Yesterday we had some fruitful deliberations with the head teacher of St Matthews Academy on Partnership Agreement. Later in the day we  attended some Geography lessons separately I and Fr. Phillip. What a difference! In the afternoon we visited two  primary schools namely St Mark's and St John Ogilvies. We were exposed to Scottish Dance. St Peters' Secondary School boys and girls on the trip displayed their dance as well.  Todays' program is to visit three primary schools associated with St Matthews Academy and then attend classes for one period for the students while Fr. Phillip and Ken will have an audience with the Guidance Teacher. As for tomorrow, the whole Malawian team will go to Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland. Expected to visit the Edinburgh Parliament Castle and other places of importance. More updates as the day goes by. Ken, Scotland.

Our Stay in Uk

Many things happened on our way to this place. One of which was the cancellation of the flight which forced us to take a night at Golden Peacock Hotel. We left that place early in the morning and boarded the 10:30 flight to Nairobi via Lusaka. We left Nairobi at 10:40pm and arrived in Netherlands at 05:10am. At 9:25am we left Netherlands for Glasgow. We were welcomed by a very cheerful group of friends from St Matthews Academy. Imagine these are the people who have never seen us before but they were so cheerful beyond our expectation. Later in the day we were taken to Celtic Park for a match between Celtic and Dundee. It was a very exciting game that one could not miss. Celtic won 3 to nil.  Sunday, we had to tour part of Glasgow and attended mass. Later in the afternoon we were taken to a museum and then to Glasgow University. Yesterday, I had to address 5 assemblies along Fr. Phillip. We toured the campus and later students had to attend classes. We had a brief  chat with the Head Teacher. Today we are to officially see him on Partnership Agreements and then we will meet the Guidance Teacher. In the afternoon we are to tour the associated primary schools. Greeting to all not forgetting my daughter Lilian and son Lawrence Koko. I miss U people! Ken
Hi, be informed that we are safely here at St Matthews Academy. Yesterday, I had to address 5 assemblies. This is so due to large numbers of students who can not be accommodated in a hall at one time. The people here are so charming. Take it. It is like we are at our homes in Malawi. They don't look at or take  you as stranger. We were taken to snow zone where we had to do some sledge. What an experience! Today, we are to meet the Head teacher, Mr Stephen Colligan over Partnership Agreement and we shall also meet the Guidance Teacher. Later in the afternoon we will visit some associated primary schools. Our schedules here is so tight.  Greetings to all not forgetting my daughter Lilian. I miss U people! Ken

The School Partnership: Preparations for the Visit to Scotland

Since 2004 St Peter's Secondary has had a partnership, first with St Michael's Academy in Kilwinning, and then St Matthew's Academy in Saltcoats in Scotland. Below is the third group from St. Peter's to visit Scotland. They leave on the 20 March and return to Mzuzu on 30 March.

“With hope, months got reduced to weeks, then weeks are reduced to a few days before we see and meet our friends in a new land, Scotland, U.K.  Scotland here we come.  Welcome us as usual.  God Bless you, friends!!”
Mr. Ken Mughogho, Head Teacher

“Now that there are few days remaining to visit Scotland and St. Matthew’s, I am really excited to meet all the amazing people and learn something new about a different culture.

I am prepared to share many stories about Malawi and the partnership to all people whom I will meet.  I also hope to learn more from them.

It is also my hope that this trip will strengthen the partnership in that whatever we will share will help it to grow more and more.

Now, only waiting for the departure day!”
Rev. Fr. Phillip Nkunika

“I am looking forward to the trip to meet new people and friends and I am also happy that I will teach people in Scotland about Malawi, like culture, religion and the education which is in Malawi.  Not only that, when I will be in Scotland, I am expecting to learn more from the people in Scotland and also they are going to learn more from me about Malawi, like the culture, religion and education which is in Scotland and Malawi.  After coming back I will be able to tell and teach my fellow students at St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School about what I have learnt in Scotland.”
Blair Mwalilino

“When I will be there I expect to see the difference in terms of education.  I mean, how the teachers teach their students compared to our country, Malawi.  Additional to that I expect to see the cultural dances also I will be very happy to watch the brilliant game at Celtic Park.”
Harry Nyirenda

“As a young Malawian going to Scotland I will be looking forward to the following:-
Experience a new world in terms of technology, infrastructure and being in a country where the majority are whites.
Looking forward to interacting with as many people as I can and to sharing experiences of our country.
Looking forward to thanking the people of Scotland for inviting, preparing and paying for everything to make our trip a success.”
Alfred Nkunika

“I’m really looking forward to meeting new people, to experience a new culture and to taste different types of food.  I want to tell Scottish people more about Malawi and to learn more from them.  When I come back I want to tell my friends more about Scotland.”
Lena Phiri

“I want to meet new people and friends, learn about their culture, how they preserve their culture, taste new food and hear new language.  I would like to see the climate in Scotland in terms of the snow and to play in the snow and make snow stars.  I would like to know how the pupils attend their classes every day.  Finally, I am looking forward to the travel using the air plane.”
Annie Swalley

“I am looking forward to the trip to meet new people and friends, to experience Scottish culture, to see how our friends live there and to compare Scottish and Malawian culture.”
